A Long Weekend Combining Kochi and Alappuzha Without Rushing
A four day Kochi and Alappuzha long weekend with realistic transfer times and where to sleep each night, so the travel does not eat the whole trip.
Written by Sicherhaven
Kochi and Alappuzha sit close enough that people try to do both in a weekend and end up spending it in a car. The fix is simple: four days, two bases, one transfer. Sleep two nights in Fort Kochi, move to Alappuzha once, sleep two nights there, and fly out from Kochi. That gives you one travel afternoon instead of four.
The drive between the two is usually somewhere in the range of an hour and a half to three hours depending on route, traffic and time of day. Treat it as an afternoon, not a hop.
Why two bases beats one
The single base version fails in both directions. Stay in Kochi and day trip to Alappuzha, and you spend four to six hours in the car for a few hours on the water, arriving in the worst light and the worst heat. Stay in Alappuzha and day trip to Kochi, and you miss the evening, which is when Fort Kochi is at its best.
Two bases costs you one hotel change. That is a fair price.
The four day plan
Day one: arrive and stay in Fort Kochi
Fly or take the train into Kochi and go straight to Fort Kochi. The transfer from the airport takes a good while and traffic decides how long, so do not schedule anything for the first evening except walking and eating.
Fort Kochi is the right first base because it is compact, walkable and has the best evening atmosphere in the city. Ernakulam is cheaper and better connected, but you will spend the difference on ferries and autos.
Evening: the beach, the fishing nets, dinner, an early night.
Day two: Kochi properly
A full day with no transfer in it.
- Morning: the churches, the streets of Fort Kochi, the galleries that are open.
- Late morning: cross to Mattancherry for the palace area and the older streets.
- Afternoon: rest. Kochi in the middle of the day is hot and there is no prize for pushing through it. If churches and galleries are not your idea of a holiday, a Kochi weekend for someone who hates sightseeing swaps most of this out.
- Evening: the ferry to Ernakulam, Marine Drive at dusk, then back. Or a Kathakali or Kalaripayattu performance in Fort Kochi, most of which run in the early evening and last about an hour.
If you are here during the Biennale months or the Cochin Carnival around the new year, the evening plan writes itself. Otherwise it pays to check what is actually on that week, which is what EventifyPlus does for Kerala towns.
Day three: transfer to Alappuzha, then the water
Move after breakfast, not at the end of the day. You arrive with the afternoon still in front of you.
Options for getting there: a taxi is simplest, buses run frequently and cheaply, and the train works if the timings suit you. Fares and schedules change, so check current times rather than planning around an old timetable.
Once there, the backwater question. Two honest choices.
- An overnight houseboat. You board in the afternoon, cruise, moor for the night, come back mid morning. Comfortable, popular, and the boat is the accommodation, so it replaces a hotel night.
- A shikara or small boat for a few hours. Cheaper, goes into narrower canals that the big boats cannot enter, and leaves you sleeping on land. Many people who have done both prefer this.
Rates vary hugely by boat, season and operator, so compare in person or through a booking you trust rather than accepting the first quote at the jetty.
Day four: Alappuzha morning, then out
Keep this light. The beach and the pier in the morning, a proper breakfast, then the transfer back to Kochi for your flight or train.
Leave more time than the map suggests. Traffic on this stretch is unpredictable and airport queues are not. If the morning leaves you slack, finding a small temple festival near you is a better use of it than another sight.
Where to sleep each night
- Nights one and two: Fort Kochi, walkable to everything, so no transport after dark.
- Night three: either on a houseboat, or in Alappuzha town or the lake side just outside it.
- Night four: ideally none. Fly out in the evening. If your flight is early, sleep near the airport rather than in Fort Kochi and save yourself a dawn drive.
The mistakes that eat the trip
- Booking a houseboat for the first night and driving three hours straight off a flight.
- Doing Alappuzha as a day trip from Kochi.
- Scheduling anything for the afternoon of a transfer day.
- Trying to add Munnar. It does not fit in four days with these two, and something will get cut. Malabar is the same problem, and Kozhikode versus Kannur for a first trip belongs to a separate trip rather than this one.
Four days, one move, two proper evenings. That is the version people come back from happy.
